How Much Local History Do You Know?
Waynesville, North Carolina, has a rich and colorful history that stretches back to the early 19th century. The town was founded in 1810 by Colonel Robert Love, a veteran of the Revolutionary War. He donated land for the original courthouse, jail, and public square and named the community in honor of his former commander, General “Mad” Anthony Wayne. Waynesville was officially incorporated as a town in 1871 and grew steadily over the decades. In 1995, it merged with the neighboring town of Hazelwood to form the unified community that continues to thrive today, now home to more than 10,000 residents.
The town is home to several historic landmarks, many of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Haywood County Courthouse, the Waynesville Municipal Building, the Boone-Withers House, Frog Level Historic District, and Waynesville Main Street Historic District, among others. These sites reflect the architectural and cultural heritage of the region, offering a glimpse into Waynesville’s development through the years.
Waynesville also played a unique role in Civil War history. On May 6, 1865 — just weeks after the official Confederate surrender — Thomas’ Legion of Highlanders, made up of both Cherokee and White soldiers, launched what became known as the “Battle” of Waynesville. They attacked Union troops camped at White Sulphur Springs, east of town, and later surrounded Waynesville itself, lighting fires on nearby ridges and performing war chants to intimidate the opposing forces. Upon learning of General Lee’s surrender, the Confederate leaders agreed to lay down arms, marking one of the final and most unusual engagements of the Civil War’s eastern theater.
Much of Waynesville’s growth can be attributed to the arrival of the railroad in 1884. A low-lying area along Richland Creek, later named “Frog Level,” became a bustling hub for business, agriculture, and tourism. Though the importance of the railroad diminished over time, the charm of Frog Level and downtown Waynesville remains. Today, the town continues to blend its historical roots with vibrant small-town life, offering a welcoming community surrounded by the natural beauty of the North Carolina mountains.
